REC has in place a formalized three-tier ESG governance system to embed accountability and sustainability into every level of its operations. Strategic oversight is led by the Board’s Risk Management Committee, while an ESG Committee of department heads steers management-level implementation and performance reviews. This is supported by a dedicated ESG Division responsible for operational execution, ensuring rigorous data validation and compliance with global disclosure standards to drive long-term value.

REC employs a proactive stakeholder engagement and materiality analysis system to align its corporate strategy with the evolving needs of internal and external partners. Through consistent communication and rigorous review, the company identifies critical sustainability risks and opportunities that impact its financial, legal, and operational resilience. This data-driven approach integrates key ESG issues directly into REC’s risk management and growth trajectory, ensuring responsible business practices that create long-term value for all stakeholders.

REC is aggressively transitioning its lending portfolio toward renewable finance to support NDCs under the Paris Agreement, achieving a 3-fold growth in absolute renewable loans during preceding 3 years. This momentum is highlighted by a 49% year-on-year growth in green loans and a 63% increase in disbursements during FY 2024-25. To date, REC has sanctioned over 61 GW of clean energy capacity, with its financed projects avoiding over 10.7 million tonnes of CO₂ emissions in Fy 2024-25. The company has strategically targeted for renewable energy projects to constitute 30% of its total loan book by FY 2030.

The company integrates rigorous ESG due diligence into its core credit appraisal process using a proprietary ESG Due Diligence Toolkit to evaluate material risks. This system includes a meticulous review of compliance standards and site visits to ensure projects adhere to high environmental and social safeguards. By embedding these considerations into every financial decision, REC effectively manages climate-related financial risks while ensuring that its investments promote responsible and inclusive development.

REC has committed to achieving Net-Zero operational emissions by 2035, supported by a clear roadmap for internal decarbonization. Key initiatives include transitioning 93% of its conventional vehicle fleet to electric vehicles and 100% green power for its Corporate Office for the FY 2025-26. Furthermore, the company maintains zero wastewater discharge at its headquarters through an on-site treatment plant, underscoring its commitment to resource conservation.

REC fosters a culture of excellence through proactive talent development and a blend of digital, classroom, and experiential learning environments. The company is dedicated to building an inclusive workforce, currently maintaining a 14.8% female employee ratio and focusing on reducing gender pay gaps at every grade level. These efforts are designed to nurture a well-balanced, motivated team capable of navigating the complex challenges of the evolving energy landscape.

Prioritizing its human capital, REC maintains a robust occupational health and safety framework, resulting in a consistent Zero Lost Time Injury Frequency Rate (LTIFR). The company provides comprehensive wellbeing facilities, including access to medical specialists and yoga trainers, alongside mandatory training on health and safety for all staff. This holistic approach ensures a safe, supportive, and productive environment that enhances employee morale and organizational resilience.

REC’s CSR initiatives are deeply rooted in its ethos of social upliftment, with a dedicated expenditure of ₹289 crore in FY 2024-25 toward health, education, and sanitation. Through the REC Foundation, the company delivers high-impact projects such as installing solar streetlights in remote regions and supporting vocational training for underprivileged communities. These programs are designed to reach the last mile, ensuring that national development remains inclusive and empowers the most vulnerable segments of society.

Recognizing the criticality of financial data, REC has implemented a robust cybersecurity framework and strong governance around information privacy. The Board-level IT Strategy Committee provides high-level oversight to ensure internal controls, regular audits, and the continuous upgrading of IT resources. Frequent employee training modules further strengthen the company’s defense against data breaches, preserving stakeholder trust and ensuring business continuity in a digital-first environment.

REC upholds the highest standards of corporate governance through a diverse Board of Directors, which includes specialized committees for risk, audit, and ESG oversight. The company is actively moving toward 50% board independence to enhance accountability and has achieved 100% training of its Directors on national responsible business guidelines. This transparent governance structure, recognized with the Golden Peacock Award, ensures that strategic decisions are aligned with long-term sustainability and stakeholder interests.

Integrity is the cornerstone of REC’s operations, supported by a zero-tolerance policy for corruption and comprehensive ethics training for all employees. The company’s Whistle Blower Policy provides a secure, confidential channel for reporting misconduct, while a dedicated Vigilance Division conducts regular inspections to reinforce compliance. By embedding ethical conduct through a formalized Code of Business Conduct, REC ensures transparency and fairness across its entire value chain.
